How to Rank High in Google

1/6/05 Google and how they relate to Click-Throughs

"I think I'm safe in saying that every search engine monitors click through ratio. You may remember that Direct Hit developed a ranking algorithm based on "click popularity." However, even though the Direct Hit algorithm is most certainly layered into Ask Jeeves and Teoma search engines, not every search engine uses the data for ranking, but more for precision. (The reason Direct Hit failed, of course, was the same reason we have click fraud. It was far too easy to manipulate.)

For example, if a page continues to rank in the top ten at Google for a specific keyword phrase, yet each time it is clicked, seconds later the user hits the back button and returns to the search engine results page, then it's not too hard for a search engine to detect that. In other words, even if that page is relevant for the algorithm by keyword, it's not very relevant for the end user. So that type of data would most likely see a page going down the charts but not necessarily help to get one up the charts."
